A delayed egress lock is designed to enhance security while allowing for a measured escape time in emergencies. Typically, these locks delay the unlocking process by either 15 or 30 seconds. This delay allows individuals to change their mind and reconsider whether they need to exit, providing an opportunity to prevent unauthorized departures, especially in settings such as healthcare facilities where patient safety is a priority.

This feature strikes a balance between security and the necessity for a timely exit during emergencies, ensuring that the potential for a secure environment remains intact while still accommodating the need to evacuate. In contrast, other timings such as 5 seconds or 10 seconds may be too brief to fulfill the intended purpose of a delayed egress system, while 1 minute might unnecessarily prolong the delay, arguably compromising safety in urgent situations.
